SHORTHANDED LADY INDIANS BATTLE NO. 4 SGP

Considering the ranking that was sported by the visiting team and the shorthanded nature of their lineup, Friday night’s District 7-6A game probably went as well as could be expected for the Waxahachie Lady Indians at Mike Turner Gymnasium. Despite 18 points by senior Rayna Ross in the absence of several players, the Lady Indians (7-11, 0-2) — who only dressed seven players — couldn’t keep pace with Class 6A No. 4-ranked South Grand Prairie, falling by a 53-38 count. Other WHS scorers were Halle Becerra and Brionna Parker with seven each, Chacarian Mies with five and Taz Valencia with a free throw. Vasana Kearney led a balanced SGP scoring attack with 12 points. Madyson Jean-Louis finished with nine and Camryn Hill, Kiara Jackson and Kendall McGruder all added eight. District 7-6A is perhaps the toughest in the state, with No. 1 DeSoto, No. 4 SGP and No. 7 Cedar Hill all occupying the upper regions of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state poll. SGP (17-1) eased out to a 14-11 first quarter lead and kept expanding it slowly the rest of the way, leading 26-19 at the half and 40-29 entering the fourth. Last Tuesday, the Lady Indians dropped a 76-56 result to Mansfield Summit on the road in their district debut. WHS led 15-13 after one, but Summit nosed in front by a bucket at the half and then turned it up in the second half to pull away. Ross poured in 23 points to lead the Lady Indians, with Williams finishing with 11. The rest of the scoresheet was even with Becerra, Valencia and freshman Kyla McBride all finishing with five points apiece, Parker with four, and Miles with three. With all allotted tournaments behind them, the Lady Indians will enjoy a long holiday break that’ll be broken up by a game on Saturday at Rowlett with tipoff set for high noon. They will host No. 1 DeSoto on Jan. 3 in the new year to resume 7-6A play.
