The football season came to a close in less-than-stellar fashion for the Waxahachie Indians on Thursday night against South Grand Prairie.

Despite scoring on its opening drive and leading after the first quarter, (2-8, 1-6) Waxahachie fell to (5-5, 4-3) SGP, 30-3.

The Indian offense began the game with a methodical 10-play, 67-yard drive that ended in a 31-yard field goal by Crisanto Perez. The kick put the Indians up 3-0 with 7:47 to play in the first quarter.

Unfortunately, Waxahachie amassed just 95 yards and four first downs thereafter.

South Grand Prairie eventually scored on the second play of the second quarter — which was also the Warriors second drive of the ballgame — when Drake Logan (7-13, 71yds, TD) completed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Titus Jackson (3-43). The Luis Cruz extra-point kick sailed through the uprights and put the Warriors on top, 7-3, with 11:11 to play in the first half.

Cruz added a 27-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the half to send SGP into the locker room up, 10-3.

South Grand Prairie went on to score a touchdown in the third quarter and two more in the fourth for the 30-3 District 7-6A win.

BY THE NUMBERS
Waxahachie senior quarterback DJ Hollywood completed 12-of-his-24 passes for 92 yards, while Casey Kelly completed 1-of-his-3 passes for 12 yards.

Kieran Page (4-32) and Jaden Basham (3-24) paced the Waxahachie receiving corps.

Elijah Martinez led the Indians on the ground with seven carries for 25 yards. Derrick Jackson added six totes for 18 yards.

As a team, the Indians were outgained 311 yards to 161. Neither team turned the football over.

Class 6A Region I
Byron Nelson d. WHS 3-0

MANSFIELD — The 2019 volleyball season came to an end for the Lady Indians as they fell to Class 6A No. 3-ranked Trophy Club Byron Nelson, 25-21, 25-10, 25-11, in an area-round match on Friday night at Timberview High School.

The Lady Indians finish with a final mark of 39-13, winning a share of the District 7-6A championship. Four seniors — Ragan Ward, Baylee Whitehead, Lacy Mott and Madison Babers — will be graduating.

WHS had beaten Lake Highlands, 25-15, 25-18, 25-12, in last Tuesday’s area round.

Nelson (45-2) advanced to face Flower Mound in the Region I quarterfinals. The Lady Bobcats were led by Charitie Luper with 16 kills and 21 digs, Paige Flickinger with 12 kills and 21 digs, and Payton Chamberlain with 39 assists and 12 digs.

Daily Light Report
In the Class 6A girls’ race, Waxahachie junior Emma Curry came in 53rd out of 149 finishers overall in a time of 18:47.35. Unlike the smaller schools, Class 5A and 6A girls run a 5,000-meter race.

The result was well off her personal record time, but Curry has one more year to improve and return. Last year as a sophomore, Curry finished in 77th place in 18:54.79 at state.
